On September 8, 2023 a 6.8 earthquake hit Marrakech and surrounding areas in the High Atlas Mountains. We have been deeply saddened by this natural disaster as many of the women artisans we work with through CARE Maroc live in the El Haouzz region. It is a region we know well also having worked with the artisans from the Eve Branson Foundation in Asni, Morocco for many years.
We composed a list of a few Moroccan NGOs that are on the ground in the epicenter who have mobilized to help the communities that need it most rebuild. Shokrun and prayers for Morocco.
Amis Des Ecoles
Amis Des Ecoles is dedicated to improving the future of Moroccan children in rural regions by alleviating poverty through educational and economic opportunities. The team at ADE had just finished a boarding house for students in Asni, Morocco, a village that was badly damaged in the earthquake. They have a team on the ground and have provided tents to villages, are building toilets and schools, and rebuilding homes in the Atlas Mountains.
Eve Branson Foundation
EBF is already working with remote High Atlas Amazigh communities, specifically in Asni, Morocco. This is an organization the Mushmina team knows well having worked with their artisans for many years. EBF has moved food, supplies, and firewood to Asni and neighboring villages and is now helping this community rebuild. Please help if you can.
Amal Nonprofit
This well-known non profit organization (restaurant and training center) based in Marrakech provides a safe space for at risk women to learn culinary skills. The Amal team distributed thousands of meals through Covid and mobilized their teams to make food for families in the High Atlas. Any donation to Amal is automatically matched. Amal has hosted many CARE-Mushmina trainings and we fully endorse their mission and ability to serve Moroccan communities.
